What is the Columbus Impact Academy?

The Columbus Impact Academy is a carefully curated leadership experience that combines professional development, civic engagement, and community exploration into one transformational journey.

Over six months, participants learn alongside a cohort of approximately 50-60 emerging professionals representing businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, educational institutions, and entrepreneurial ventures throughout Central Ohio.

Rather than sitting through lectures, participants experience leadership firsthand by meeting remarkable people, exploring the city from new perspectives, volunteering together, and learning how decisions made across sectors influence the future of our region.

Why We Created the Impact Academy

Columbus is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. Its future depends on leaders who understand not only how to succeed professionally, but how to build stronger organizations, neighborhoods, and communities. We created the Columbus Impact Academy because we believe leadership is learned through experiences, relationships, curiosity, and service.

Our mission is simple: To develop leaders who know Columbus, love Columbus, and invest in Columbus.

We brelieve leadership isn't simply about managing people. It's about improving the places where people live, work, and belong.

What Makes the Impact Academy Different?

Many leadership programs focus primarily on management skills or professional advancement. The Columbus Impact Academy develops something bigger: leaders who understand their community, discover where they can make a difference, and establish a greater sense of place and purpose. Participants experience Columbus firsthand while building relationships with the people helping shape its future. Along the way, they gain a deeper understanding of how business, government, nonprofits, education, culture, and neighborhoods work together to create a thriving community.

An Experiential Leadership Journey

Over the course of six month, the Impact Academy takes participants beyond the traditional classroom through interactive workshops, authentic conversations with community leaders, team-building activities and field trips, volunteer experiences, and behind-the-scenes exploration throughout Columbus. Each experience builds upon the next, helping participants strengthen their leadership skills while developing a deeper understanding of the people, places, and organizations shaping Central Ohio.

Rooted in Columbus

We believe the best leaders understand the communities they serve. Throughout the six-month experience, participants explore Columbus neighborhoods, history, culture, businesses, nonprofits, and civic institutions while gaining a deeper appreciation for the opportunities and challenges facing our region. The goal isn't simply to live and work in Columbus. It's to understand it, become connected to it, and discover where your own talents and passions can make an impact.

Accessible Leadership Development

Exceptional leadership opportunities shouldn't be limited by cost. The Columbus Impact Academy was intentionally designed to make a high-quality, comprehensive leadership experience accessible to emerging professionals across every sector. At $750 for the six-month experience, participants receive more than 30 hours of leadership development, community experiences, relationship-building, and experiential learning at a fraction of the cost of many traditional leadership programs.

Community Impact Lab

Community engagement is built directly into the Academy through our Community Impact Lab, where participants connect with local nonprofit and community organizations to better understand real challenges and opportunities facing Central Ohio. Through discovery, collaboration, and hands-on service, participants explore how their strengths and professional skills can be used beyond the workplace to create meaningful community impact.

A Cross-Sector Network

Every cohort brings together 50 to 70 emerging professionals representing different industries, backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Participants learn alongside professionals from business, healthcare, education, government, nonprofits, technology, entrepreneurship, professional services, arts and culture, and more. These relationships often become one of the most valuable parts of the Impact Academy experience.

Built on 20+ Years of Connecting Columbus

The Impact Academy is presented by the Columbus Young Professionals Club, which has spent more than 20 years building and leading Central Ohio's young professional community and has grown into the nation's largest membership association for emerging professionals. That level of expertise gives the Academy a unique foundation of relationships across business, nonprofit, government, civic leadership, entrepreneurship, arts and culture, and community development.

Leadership That Lasts

The journey doesn't end at graduation. Participants become part of a growing community of more than 400 Impact Academy graduates across 11 cohorts, with continued opportunities for mentoring, volunteerism, board service, professional networking, community involvement, and future Academy engagement. We often say that you don't simply complete the Impact Academy. You become part of a community of leaders invested in each other and in the future of Columbus.
